The Marton Wakes: the friendly fete
Saturday 23 July 2016
The highlight of our village year is the Marton Wakes Fete. Held on the penultimate Saturday in July every year, it has been running for at least 125 years. Retaining all the best qualities of a traditional village fete, it finds something new each year – and tends to get bigger each year too.
It always begins with the children of the village, appropriately costumed, processing through the village along with Rose Queens and their retinues from nearby villages. Then we crown our Rose Queen, before having a thoroughly splendid time. Traditional games, transport and animal shows, fairground rides, circus skills, visiting bands and excellent burgers (thank you Alan).
